Supported static visuals keep their SVG and source metadata. Interactive blocks keep their HTML source and launcher inside ZIP.

Your browser
does the work.
Exports are assembled locally. Your chat content and session credentials aren't sent to the developer.

wherever you go next.
The useful part is yours: research, decisions, instructions and files. Keep them in formats you can read and reuse beyond one conversation.
Reuse depends on the destination tool. Chat Exporter doesn't automatically import projects into another AI or provide a cloud server.

Files, images & projects
Will my files be downloaded too?
Yes — choose ZIP to keep available attachments and project files alongside your conversations. Files must still be accessible through your ChatGPT account at the time of export.
Will it save uploaded and AI-generated pictures?
Yes, when the original image files are still available. ZIP keeps accessible uploads and generated images as files, so you can reuse them beyond the conversation.
Can I download an entire project?
Yes. Project export brings accessible conversations, project instructions, files and supported visualization sources together in one ZIP. You keep the context around the work, not only individual messages.
Can I pause an export and continue later?
Yes. ZIP exports of chats and projects can be paused and resumed. Completed chats and files are saved locally, so you can continue the remaining work later. See the pause and resume walkthrough →
Can I close the tab or restart my browser?
Yes. Saved ZIP export progress can survive closing the tab, reloading the page or restarting the browser. Return to the same ChatGPT chat or project in the same browser profile and resume the export. The tab does not need to stay open to retain saved progress; downloading continues when you return and resume.
Will resuming download everything again?
Completed parts can be reused. A file that was still downloading may restart from the beginning, and the extension may retrieve chat information again. Resume depends on the saved browser data and continued access to the content. Clearing site data can remove saved progress; some extension updates may require a fresh export.
What happens to deleted, expired or inaccessible files?
The archive report records unavailable resources so you can see what could not be retrieved. Chat Exporter cannot recover a file that ChatGPT no longer makes available.
Will drawings, diagrams and charts be saved?
Yes, for supported visuals. ZIP preserves supported static visualizations as SVG plus source metadata. If a diagram cannot be rendered, its source metadata is retained where available. See the SVG example →
What about animations and interactive visualizations?
Supported interactive blocks keep their original HTML source and a launcher in ZIP. Self-contained examples can stay interactive; blocks that depend on external libraries or services may still need them. This saves the source, rather than recording every animation as a video. Try the interactive example →
Are formulas, tables and code preserved?
Supported formulas, tables and code are included in the relevant export formats. Choose PDF for a visual document, Markdown for editable text, or JSON for structured reuse. Rendering can vary by content and format; interactive content stays static in PDF.
Accounts & privacy
Do I need to sign in or create another account?
No separate Chat Exporter account is needed. Use your existing signed-in ChatGPT session to access your chats and files. You do not enter your ChatGPT password into the extension.
Does my information pass through your server?
No. The extension retrieves content from ChatGPT and referenced file hosts, then assembles the export locally in your browser. Chat content and session credentials are not sent to a Chat Exporter export server or to the developer.
Does the extension track my conversations or show ads?
No. The extension has no analytics or ads and does not send your conversations to the developer. Website hosting is separate from extension processing; see the privacy details.
Does local processing mean I can export without internet?
An internet connection is needed to retrieve chats and available files. After downloading, local documents can be opened independently. Interactive HTML may still need external dependencies. Local processing does not make your ChatGPT session anonymous.
Choosing & reusing your export
Which format should I choose?
Choose PDF to read or share a visual document, Markdown to edit the text, JSON to work with structured messages, Raw JSON for the returned conversation tree, or ZIP to keep content and available files together. Explore every format with animated examples →
How is JSON different from Raw JSON?
Normalized JSON presents messages from the active User/Assistant branch in a simpler structure. Raw JSON preserves the conversation payload returned by ChatGPT, including branch metadata when present. Within ZIP, local file references may be rewritten; it is not a byte-for-byte copy of the response.
Can I reuse the export in other AI tools?
Yes, in tools that accept the exported formats and files. The current extension exports from ChatGPT; it does not automatically import or restore a project in another AI service.
Is Chat Exporter an official OpenAI product?
No. Chat Exporter is an independent extension, not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI.
