How to export a ChatGPT Project
Keep your project’s accessible conversations, instructions and files together.
A project can contain more than a transcript: instructions, shared files, individual chat attachments and visual work. A project ZIP keeps these parts together for your own records and later reuse.
Export the project
- Install Chat Exporter once the Chrome Web Store listing is available.
- Sign in to ChatGPT and open the Project you want to save.
- Open its menu and choose Download project.
- Let the export finish. You can reopen its progress window or stop the operation.
- Extract the downloaded ZIP, read its manifest and check for unavailable files or failed conversations.
Pause now, finish later
You can pause a project ZIP export and close the tab. Completed chats and files remain saved locally. Return to the project in the same browser profile and account to resume the remaining work. An unfinished file may restart; clearing browser site data can remove saved progress. Read the resume instructions.
What the archive contains
The exporter requests project metadata and instructions, accessible project chats, files attached directly to the project, and available assets within each chat. Conversations include Markdown, normalized JSON and Raw JSON; supported visuals are stored alongside them. Project export does not promise one combined PDF of the entire project.
What to verify
Open several conversations and their linked files. Check large assets and old attachments in particular: an expired or deleted file cannot be reconstructed from a link. Keep the original ZIP as well as your extracted working copy. Large projects need sufficient browser memory and disk space.
Backup and restore are different
This is an export, not a one-click restore mechanism. You can reuse the saved formats in other tools, but there is no automatic recreation of ChatGPT Projects or transfer of an AI service’s memory. Export only projects you can access, and check your organisation’s rules before sharing the resulting files.
